Eugene Hernandez is an elected member of the Board of Directors of the Sylmar Neighborhood Council in Los Angeles and Chairperson of their Outreach Committee. He is on the Los Angeles Mission College Community Advisory Board and Expansion Committee. He is a former Member of the San Fernando Valley Fair Housing Board, East Los Angeles Health Task Force and San Fernando Valley Community Mental Health Corp. Hernandez was Latino Outreach Coordinator for Byron De Lear???s 2006 congressional campaign. He serves on the San Fernando Valley Greens Political Outreach Committee and is a member of the Los Angeles Green Party.
Hernandez was a member of the Service Employees International Union, Local 535, Los Angeles County Chapter and has been a union organizer, chairperson, officer, shop steward, and member of a bargaining team. He is a member of the Minority Caucus, S.E.I.U. Latino Caucus. Hernandez taught Chicano studies classes at CSUN, and has done field work in the Barrio. He founded the Antelope Valley Latinos for Social Justice and organized a march for dignity against the racist statements of Assemblyman Pete Knight. He formed the Latino Heritage Council for the Antelope Valley Unified School District and is the founder of the San Fernando Valley Chapter of Parents of Murdered Children.
