Former Senate candidate Carl Romanelli speaks at Anti-War Rally
PHILADELPHIA -- Carl Romanelli, the 2006 Green Party candidate for Senate, spoke at an anti-war rally in Philadelphia last Friday. The date marked the sixth anniversary of the congressional vote to authorize President Bush to make war on Iraq. As Romanelli noted, "Congress gave President Bush the authority to make war without further consultation of the legislative branch."
Romanelli had harsh words for both Republicans and Democrats. Referring the fact that too many Congressional Democrats voted in favor of the war, Romanelli remarked, "One would assume that at the Democrats would be distrustful of an administration installed by the US Supreme Court."
Romanelli questioned how Congressional Democrats claim to not know back in 2001 that Bushs arguments for war were wrong. "Are we to think that the Greens had better intelligence than the US Congress? I think not, so if we knew; how could congress not know? No weapons of mass destruction, we knew. No credibility in Powells claims, we knew. That Bush should not be trusted, we knew. So if we knew, what excuse do the Democrats have for giving Bush everything he wanted? They gave him his tax cuts, his Patriot Act, his war on terror, FISA and a Wall St. bailout. And during the same seven years, the Democrats have tried to destroy us. If only they used that zeal on the war criminals in the administration, rather than on the voice of peace and justice; how different today could have been."
Romanelli concluded with a plea for voters to consider more options than just McCain or Obama. "We need to stand up and stop thinking that only two versions of the same pathology is the only thing "rational voters" can consider I strongly suggest a vote for Cynthia McKinney or Ralph Nader."
The rally was organized by a broad coalition of organizations under the name Philly Against War. Participating organizations included, Brandywine Peace Community, Catholic Peace Fellowship, Northeast Philly for Peace & Justice, and the Green Parties of Philadelphia and Delaware County.
