Discontented voters could go Green
Happy Valentine's Day to the Illinois Green Party. Their Valentine arrived early in the form of the Feb. 2 primary. Why? Because the dreadfully low turnout coupled with extremely tight races on both the Democratic and Republican sides suggest that voters might actually be in search of a candidate called "None of the Above."

Green party hopeful taps anger
Lexington doctor Jill Stein launched her second long-shot campaign for governor yesterday with a forceful attempt to tap the populist anger that propelled Republican Scott Brown into the US Senate last month. "If you've had enough business as usual, if you've had enough of the culture of influence, if you've had enough payoffs and layoffs and rip-offs and bailouts, this is the campaign for you," Stein, a Green-Rainbow Party candidate, told about three dozen supporters, speaking from the steps of the State House.

Green Party's California gubernatorial candidate steps up
With approval ratings at record lows for Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Democratic-dominated Legislature, it wouldn't be a surprise if Californians started looking outside the two major parties for a savior. Green Party gubernatorial candidate Laura Wells would like to be that alternative. The Oakland woman toured Sacramento this week to announce her candidacy while preaching her message of budget reform and higher taxes on wealthy Californians.

Green Party Candidate Gets 13 Times Party Registration in Assembly Race
Green Party State Assembly candidate Jane Rands collected an astounding 13 times her party's registration here Tuesday night in the 72nd Assembly District seat vacated by a lawmaker nabbed boasting about sexual affairs with lobbyists. Ms. Rands said the relatively high vote for an underfunded political party reflects growing voter disenchantment with the GOP and Democrats, and special interest money.

The Green Party's nadir
This should be a great time for the Green Party. Its namesake color is being cited by every corporation and politician who wants to get in good with the environmentally-minded public; voters in San Francisco are more independent than ever; and progressives have been increasingly losing the hope they placed on President Barack Obama.

Activist Claims State Police Engaged In 'Political Spying' Online
A political activist and free-lance journalist who is suing the police over his arrest in Hartford at Gov. M. Jodi Rell's 2007 inauguration parade says he has found evidence that state police used phony e-mail identities to gather information on political activities. The state police engaged in "political spying" using "cloaked Connecticut State Police addresses" to "subscribe to e-mail bulletin boards and lists ... that contain political information relating to the Green Party, the Democratic Party" and political activists, plaintiff Kenneth Krayeske of Hartford says in federal court papers.

As Congress Collapses, a Call to Greens and Libertarians: Get Ready to Govern
... In reality, greens and libertarians appreciate two views of the same system - the ecosystem, economic and ecological. They know it is beyond our capacity to control that system, and that attempts to do so will often backfire. And they know that our real hope lies in understanding, aligning with, and harnessing the benefits of those systems, not in controlling them.

Why Democrats and Republicans Won't Confront Black Mass Incarceration, and Why The Green Party Will
With less than 5% of the world's population, the US accounts for a quarter of the world's prisoners. While African Americans are only an eighth the population, we account for almost half the locked down. America's widely acknowledged but rarely discussed social policy of black mass incarceration has been a decisive fact of African American family and community life for a generation.

Portland City Council Chooses Mayor, Overlooking Green Candidate
In the past, councilors took turns being mayor, based on seniority. But for the second year in a row, the council overlooked Green party members who were next in line, the paper reports, choosing Mavodones instead. Green party councilor David Marshall, a declared candidate for the job, called the selection process a "fallacy."

Green Party Candidate Challenges Primary Rival's Affiliation
... Green Party candidate Tom Tresser, who made a name for himself as the leader of the anti-Olympics group No Games Chicago, has challenged the petitions of his Green Party primary opponent Sean Burke upon finding out that Burke is associated with the web address for the Cook County Young Democrats. Perhaps Dems fear that that Tresser's candidacy could draw enough reformers and liberals to hand the race to a Republican, particularly if Terry O'Brien is the Dems' candidate candidate. Or maybe Democrats are just being mean.

Underdog Green party raise big cash in push for upset of Peter Vallone Jr.

She opened her lecture at the Mews Hall lounge by recalling the particularly significant history of racial activism at the University.

South Carolina Green Party Case Moves Ahead in 4th Circuit
The U.S. Court of Appeals, 4th circuit, has set a briefing schedule in South Carolina Green Party v South Carolina Election Commission. All the briefs will be in by October 30. The case concerns the constitutionality of a South Carolina law that says if one party has already nominated its candidate for a particular office, and then that nominee tries and fails to get the nomination of another party, then the first party is no longer able to run that candidate in the November election. In the particular incident which triggered the lawsuit, the Green Party nominated Eugene Platt for the legislature. Later, Platt tried to get the Democratic nomination as well (South Carolina permits two parties to jointly run the same nominee). Because Platt tried to get the Democratic nomination and failed, the Green Party was told that it couldn't run Platt as its own nominee.

Ward Two: Gordon, Aigbogun and … no DFLer
The Minneapolis City Council's lone Green Party member, Cam Gordon, is used to anything-might-happen electoral outcomes in Ward Two, which straddles the Mississippi River and includes the city's sprawling University of Minnesota campus. But in this year's race, Gordon knows one thing for sure: He isn't going to finish within 150 votes of a DFL Party candidate, as he has twice before. That's because the only barrier to his re-election is Republican - and Independence Party - endorsed Allen Aigbogun.

Not Like Mike
Reverend Billy Tallen bursts onstage wearing a white tuxedo and a black priest's habit, his platinum hair sprayed into an Elvis bouffant. A 35-member gospel choir breaks into a soulful hum and within seconds, the packed New York City auditorium erupts in shouts of "Amen" and "Hallelujah." "I know some of you are shopping too much," Tallen bellows to a room packed with aging hippies and twenty-something hipsters. "Consuming too much, sneaking off to the big box. You gotta push back!" And with that, his back-up singers launch into their first anti-consumerist anthem of the night. "Who are these politicos? Have you ever seen one lie?" the choir sings, as the Reverend wings his head up and down, his arms reaching to the heavens. "They gotta live uptown. Somewhere where they can hide. Who buys them all that TV time? He's the one who broke your lease. Officials slick their palms with grease" This is tried-and-true material for "the Rev," as William Tallen, 59, is known. Ever since he founded the Church of Life After Shopping, after the World Trade Center attacks in 2001, he has been spreading the gospel that Americans cannot buy their way out of their problems. In the years since, Tallen has amassed hundreds of followers and become arguably the most entertaining champion of embattled mom-and-pop retailers in the city. But this year, he upped the ante.

An Open Challenge to San Diego Green Party Members
First of all a personal note for those who don't know me... While I don't claim to be an expert on politics or activism; I am one of only a half dozen San Diego Greens to ever get elected to local office (the mid-city planning board) and the only Green to serve on a city-wide task force (the Needle Exchange Task Force). I am, also, one the few Greens who can walk into half the City Council offices (all Democrats) without an appointment and speak with a Council person.

So Much for the Promised Land
LeAlan Jones, the 30-year-old Green Party candidate for Barack Obama's old Senate seat in Illinois, is as angry at injustice as he is at the African-American intellectual and political class that accommodates it. He does not buy Obama’s "post-racial" ideology or have much patience with African-American leaders who, hungry for prestige, power and money, have, in his eyes, forgotten the people they are supposed to represent. They have confused a personal ability to be heard and earn a comfortable living with justice.

Day 2: Greens take a hard look at themselves in Durham
Day Two of the Green Party's 2009 National Meeting in Durham featured a forum on single-payer health care (though "forum" may be a stretch; the consensus was that single-payer is the best, and only, option) and press conferences introducing Green Party elected officials, and candidates, to the world.

Day 1: Green Party's 2009 National Meeting in Durham

Florida Green Party Filing Fee Case Delayed
In 2008, five individuals filed in the Florida Green Party primary to run for the state legislature. Lawsuit Filed Today Against Washington Secretary Of State: Claims One Million Voters Deprived Of Constitutional Right To A Secret Ballot
This morning, four Washington voters and a local political party sued Washington's chief elections officer, seeking to prohibit placement of unique bar code identifiers on ballots. The suit alleges that actions of Secretary of State Sam Reed required approximately one million voters to vote on ballots that contained unique bar code identifiers, in violation of the State Constitution's guarantee of "absolute secrecy" of the ballot and statutes requiring uniform ballots within a precinct. The suit also claims that Reed has encouraged and subsidized an uncertified ballot tracking "audit" system that links the ballot identifiers to voters' identities, further undermining ballot secrecy by potentially permitting vendors and officials to inspect how a citizen voted.

Howie Hawkins to run in city
In Hawkins' most successful run, four years ago in the mayoral contest, he outshone current incumbent Democrat Matt Driscoll and current County Executive Republican Joanie Mahoney in forums and debates, hammering on the issue of public power. He brought the issue to the table, put it on the city's agenda, and finally maneuvered it into the city budget for a study of the concept. The phrase most often heard about that effort then was, "If only Howie were a Democrat, I could vote for him." That effort and its results got local Greens thinking maybe they could win an election, if they could find the right one.

Despite Slight Schism, Green Party Gets Religion with Rev. Billy
Aside from the spiraling disco ball lights and the large "ELECT-ALUJAH" sign on the wall, it could almost have been any campaign meeting. Rev. After a lengthy discussion on defining commercial rent control policy, the conversation turned to campaigning in Brooklyn's Grand Army Plaza greenmarket that Saturday.

Pat LaMarche has traveled the world. She ran for governor of Maine and even vice president of the United States. She has also been the host of a successful morning radio program and penned a book - all while raising two children. It is fitting, then, that the Free Gaza Movement chooses May 1 to announce the launching of the HOPE FLEET TO GAZA. We are leaving on June 1 as an act of solidarity with the Palestinians, a people who have been massacred, terrorized and suffocated by the Israeli military.

A Green Party first: contested primary in race for Emanuel's seat
... Because the party's candidate won more than 5 percent of the vote in the 2006 gubernatorial race, it's now a lot easier for Greens to get on the ballot in Illinois. In order to run in the upcoming primary, for example, Green Party candidates had to gather 30 signatures; independent candidates must collect at least 12,586. "That's ridiculous, to collect that in three weeks," said Illinois Green Party Representative Patrick Kelly. "There's just no way. I'm not even sure Ralph Nader could do that."

Obama's silence over the atrocities in Gaza speaks volumes
Gaza is being bombed by Israel, the frightened children; their hungry mothers and the rest of their poor families are being bombed. Schools, hospitals, mosques, markets and other public places are being bombed. The cover for this, the terrible excuse, is that they are attacking terrorists.

The myth of balance in conflict over Gaza
We hear in response to Israel's ongoing massacre in Gaza that Israel has the right to defend itself from the Hamas government. While both sides had previously violated a truce begun in June 2008, Israel's massive attack inside Gaza on Nov. 4 predictably elicited Hamas rockets. Already blockading Gaza since June 2007, Israel sealed it off completely on Nov. 5, causing life-threatening shortages of basic necessities -- food, fuel and medical supplies. Under international law, neither Israel killing Palestinian civilians nor Gazans targeting Israeli civilians is justified. But as Americans we need to understand that the true root of this violence is an illegal occupation and ethnic cleansing.

We Lived to Tell the Story; Lebanon Rescued Us
Yesterday, we met with the President of Lebanon, the Chief of the Military, and the Interior Minister who all thanked us for responding and risking our lives on a mission of mercy; we profusely thanked them for rescuing us. What would we have done, stranded out at sea, prohibited from reaching our destination, low on fuel, with a badly damaged boat if Lebanon had not accepted us? Lebanon sent their ships to find us. Lebanon rescued us. Lebanon welcomed us. And we are truly thankful.

First Selectman's Goal: A More User-Friendly Windham
When Jean de Smet was elected last year as Windham's first selectman, she said she wanted to shake up the office by turning "town hall into a public service." De Smet's goal almost was overshadowed by her triumph. She was the first Green Party candidate to be elected first selectman in the largely Democratic town. Third-party candidates rarely succeed in getting elected, but de Smet got the win by rallying voters around a specific issue. She beat Windham's three-term Democratic First Selectman Michael Paulhus by campaigning to make local government more open to the public and to give residents easier access to town hall.

Malik Rahim: Another Candidate in Louisiana's 2nd District
However, there is a strong Green Party candidate in Malik Rahim. Malik founded the Common Ground Collective and brought 13,000 volunteers to the area after Hurricane Katrina. Malik and his volunteers provided free health care, housing, and other assistance to those in need. His efforts were covered on 60 minutes, ABC News, Democracy Now!, the Times-Picayune, and several others. Now he's running a strong campaign for Congress. Local volunteers and Greens across the nation are hitting the streets and making calls to get him elected. He's raised tens of thousands of dollars in small donations from individuals. However, his local paper severly underreported his donations, since they only counted large donations. Although Obama took his share of large and corporate donations, can you imagine if they didn't report the millions of small donations he received? Why is it acceptable to massage the numbers for a Green?

In Final Days of Congressional Campaign, Green Party Candidate Fights Local Media Blackout in New Orleans
In the years following the collapse of the federal levees after Hurricane Katrina, activist Malik Rahim was busy organizing one of the most influential recovery organizations in the Gulf South. The organization he founded and currently leads, Common Ground Collective, was gutting houses and providing medical and legal services to tens of thousands of New Orleans residents. "I'm from New Orleans, and I stayed here after the flood to serve my community, at a time when neglect from the federal government was as chilling as it was apparent," said Rahim. Even the local paper in New Orleans the Times-Picayune featured him in an article after the storm, stating that his work was "so far-reaching that it has brought over 10,000 volunteers to New Orleans since the city was devastated by Hurricane Katrina." But the media coverage ended once he decided to run for office this fall.

North Carolina Minor Party Election Lawsuit Now Docketed in State Court of Appeals
The lawsuit Libertarian Party of North Carolina v State Board of Elections is now docketed in the State Court of Appeals in Raleigh. It is case number 08-1413. The Green Party is a co-plaintiff. The case was filed in 2003 and challenges all the North Carolina election laws that make life difficult for minor parties in that state. The main thrust of the lawsuit attacks the ballot access laws, but many other issues exist as well, including the ability of voters to register as members of parties that are not currently qualified. Although the Libertarian Party is now back on the ballot through the 2012 election, the Green Party is not, so the case is not moot in any sense.

Iowa's alternative parties analyze election outcome
Only two percent of Iowa voters supported third party presidential candidates this year, but Iowa’s third party activists are more analytical than disappointed when they examine their levels of support. "My suspicion is that there is a kind of 'automatic' knee-jerk third party vote which is almost always guaranteed," said Holly Hart of the Iowa Green Party. "None of the third party candidates since Nader’s 2000 run have broken past that."

Ten Greens I'm Thankful For
Ten Greens I'm Thankful For: Cynthia McKinney, for taking the plunge into the Green Party and being our standard bearer in 2008, for inspiring and exciting Greens across the country, for brilliantly articulating a message of radical yet common sense change for America, and for bringing new folks into the party. I was proud to campaign for her.

Community Organizer VS Corrupt Politician: The December 6 New Orleans Congressional Election
The December 6 New Orleans congressional election isn't just a local choice between a privatizing "minority" Republican, a notoriously corrupt Democrat and a caring, competent community organizer running on the Green Party ticket. In these times when anyone, anywhere can contribute to the efforts of real progressives with the click of a mouse, or volunteer to reach undecided voters, the days leading to this election are a test of whether there exists even the shadow of a national movement mature enough to hold any black Democrats the least bit accountable to the needs of his constituents

African Americans, Peace and the Plight of Palestinians
Former Georgia congresswoman and recent Green Party presidential candidate Cynthia McKinney was scheduled to give the following address in Damascus, Syria at a Conference to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. She notes that this year also marks "the 60th year that the Palestinian people have been denied their Right of Return, enshrined in that Universal Declaration." However, Delta Airlines personnel prevented Ms. McKinney from boarding her flight. She describes the incident as "a dispute over my paperwork."

Boston Progressives Should Not Jump to Conclusions About Councilor Chuck Turner
If there's one politician that Boston community and labor activists can count on to "afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted" it's Boston City Councilor Chuck Turner (G/R - District 7). One of the vanishingly few African-American politicians in this "majority minority" city, he has energetically represented the interests of his largely low-income constituency of color. But he has also been a rare progressive voice in a sea of conservative politicians - most of whom are Democrats, but that's Massachusetts for you - and a bridge-builder to other communities and constituencies around the region. Not coincidentally, he is the only Green-Rainbow Party elected official in Boston. Yet today the city awoke to the startling news that Turner was arrested by the FBI at 7 a.m. this morning at City Hall, and charged with accepting $1000 in bribes from the same government informant who gave over $23,000 in bribes to former state Senator Dianne Wilkerson in exchange for assistance getting a liquor license for the Dejavu nightclub on Melnea Cass Blvd. in Roxbury.

Cynthia McKinney & Rosa Clemente represent the kind of politics we all need to see in our own countries
I read the other day that Toni Morrison will be voting for Obama. A couple of weeks ago it was Alice Walker writing what I described as "driveling bullshit." and one more example of the mainstreaming of the progressives - Rosa Clemente has a more definitive list here. Obama talks about bringing "fundamental change" but the only fundamental change is his colour and when one looks more closely even his colour is not that fundamental after all. Obama is intrinsically tied to the mainstream, pro-Zionist war mongering American superstructure. Though disappointing it is not so surprising that so many millions all over the world have been drawn in by Obama who panders to black and white notions of a "post racial" America and world. An imaginary world of convenience particularly for the millions of white people who will vote him into the White House.

Why I Am Supporting the Candidacy of Cynthia McKinney
A recent think piece in the Washington Post declared that this has been "a transformative year for women in politics." This pronouncement was based primarily on Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin's attempt to brand herself as a feminist who happens to hold opinions contrary to traditional feminist values and important changes like women not having to dress like a man to be taken seriously in politics.

Election 2008: Some students opt to vote third party, or not at all
Though the effort to "get out the vote" for Obama has been non-stop on Macalester's campus as of late, come election day some students will be voting for a third party candidate or not voting at all. "It will sort of depend on how I feel [on election day]," Brendan Rogers '10 said. If he does go to the polls, Rogers said, it will be most likely be to vote for Cynthia McKinney, the Green Party presidential candidate, because, he said, "the Green Party is the lesser of three evils."

Swayed Green, Cynthia McKinney Supporters at Swathmore
As November 4th draws nearer, there is an increasing buzz of anticipation as well as anxiety on this campus over the outcome of the election. The overwhelming majority of Swatties are supporting Democratic hopeful Barack Obama with a few vying for McCain, but another possibly smaller minority of students intend to or have already voted for Green Party candidate Cynthia McKinney. McKinney, a former Democratic Congresswoman from Georgia, is running for office with activist-journalist Rosa Clemente as Vice Presidential candidate.

The Other Nominees
Meet Cynthia McKinney and Rosa Clemente, the presidential and vice presidential nominees for the Green Party of the United States. One would expect McKinney, former congresswoman representing the Fourth CD of Georgia, and Clemente, community organizer, journalist and political activist, to be propelled onto the national stage with the same vigor shown at least to the other third-party candidates. After all, McKinney, who is African American, and Clemente, an Afro-Puerto Rican, are the first ever minority female ticket in U.S. history. So why is it in a time of 'firsts' and an election termed the most 'diverse and progressive' have so few Americans even heard of McKinney, Clemente or their platform?

Health Care McKinney believes that healthcare is a right and she believes in a "Medicare-for-all" system. She states that doctors prefer single-payer health care. She continues to organize conferences focused on the empowerment of young people of color, working in colleges, community centers, and prisons. Third party hopeful bucks party lines at Naperville stop
Cynthia McKinney's journey toward becoming a member of the Green Party started years ago when she was in the Georgia state Legislature. A lifelong Democrat, she remembers the outbreak of the 1991 Gulf War. "I saw the Gulf War on television, and it looked beautiful, if you didn't know they were bombs (falling)," McKinney said Wednesday in Naperville. McKinney didn't know it at the time, but when her legislative colleagues walked out on her protest speech given on the floor of Congress and blocked all of her subsequent legislation, she was headed down the road that would result in her becoming the Green Party's nominee for president of the United States.

The Green Party Presidential ticket of Cynthia McKinney and Rosa Clemente brings something special and unprecedented to U.S. politics. Burbank worked as a groundskeeper at Walker's Point, the Bush family's compound on the Maine coast, all through high school. He forged a connection with George H.W. Green McKinney interviewed by NPR
The full audio of Green presidential nominee Cynthia McKinney's six-minute interview with NPR's Weekend Edition can be heard here. McKinney said in part, "The Green Party has been very conveniently put into a box. And it's convenient for the other political parties to say, ‘Oh, well, you know, they're just that environment party.' Yes, the Green Party is committed to a healthy environment. But the Green Party is not solely committed to just that. In fact, the policy prescriptions that the Green Party advocates are based on four pillars. Those pillars include not only ecological wisdom but also peace, social justice and grassroots democracy. And you could see the Green Party actually living out those pillars when they consistently did not support the war, consistently supported those who had an anti-war record."

3rd party candidates charge Dems, GOP avoid key issues
One is an inventor who runs a sawmill. The other is a photographer. Peter Boyce, of the Constitution Party, and Jason Grover, of the Green Party, are both trying to do something few have done in the last century: win election to Congress as a third-party candidate. They have showed up at debates, reached out to voters and articulated their positions on important issues from health care to federal spending. Neither has a major party apparatus behind him. No army of volunteers, no paid staff, no vast array of yard signs. They face a well-funded incumbent in U.S. Rep. Frank LoBiondo, R-2nd. But they are running because each believes the two major parties have failed to address key issues. They feel unrepresented and believe other people do, too.

A private security company organized and managed by former Secret Service officers spied on Greenpeace and other environmental organizations from the late 1990s through at least 2000, pilfering documents from trash bins, attempting to plant undercover operatives within groups, casing offices, collecting phone records of activists, and penetrating confidential meetings. According to company documents provided to Mother Jones by a former investor in the firm, this security outfit collected confidential internal records-donor lists, detailed financial statements, the Social Security numbers of staff members, strategy memos-from these organizations and produced intelligence reports for public relations firms and major corporations involved in environmental controversies.

Editorial: Greening democracy
If American democracy were to submit to a checkup — blood pressure, cholesterol, weight — some troubling symptoms would be recorded on its chart. Topping the list is low voter participation. Barely 50 percent vote in national elections, and even fewer in local and off year elections. That’s like someone who brushes his teeth every other day — not good for his health, and not good for those around him.

The 2008 Presidential Campaign: On the Left, the Greens and the Nader Campaign

Last week, Drug War Chronicle examined the alternative on the right, the Libertarian Party, and its presidential campaign. This week, we turn our view to the left, to the Green Party and the independent campaign of Ralph Nader.
