Patti Smith |
You Rock, Patti!
Last week, it was announced that avant-guard punk artist, poet, and
activist Patti Smith will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame on March 12th. Ms. Smith has been on the forefront of music
throughout her decades spanning career; and her songs and actions show
an unflinching commitment to feminism, justice, and democracy. Patti
Smith registered as a Green in 2000 when she campaigned for Green Party
presidential candidate Ralph Nader and continues to speak out and
campaign against the war in Iraq.
Congrats Patti! |

Green Line Reader Response
Dear Green Party:
One of your holiday tips reads:
6) Organic Vegan Dinner! Give a gift of a locally
grown organic vegan dinner either at your favorite
local haunt or you prepare it. The lower we eat on the
food chain the healthier the environment.
This is a standard misunderstanding on the left.
First, it is impossible to farm sustainably without
animals inputs. Second, vegan food does not grow where
I live--New England. What grows here is cows (and
venison). Animals integrated into perennial
polycultures, using only ambient sun and rain, is the
*only* way to protect and build topsoil.
Contrast this to growing annual monocrops--the
plant-based grains touted by the vegans. Growing
annual monocrops destroys the soil. This is hwat
humans have been doing for 10,000 years, and we are
now oout of soil. Without soil there is no life.
Humans have so destroyed the world by agriculture that
if it wasn't for nitrogen from cheap fossil fuel, the
human population would long ago have crashed.
What the vegans are insisting is that essentially we
all must be dependent on the American midwest, which
is being degraded into desert by annual monocrops.
What will we eat when the last particle of soil has
turned to dust and the last drop of oil has left the
ground?
I know what I'll be eating--the cows and birds that
eat the pasture and browse on my farm. It's in my
backyard, and a thousand years from now, the only
thing different will be a few *more* inches of
topsoil.
You should be encouraging people to eat locally from
pasture-based farms that build topsoil and use no
irrigation and have no need for fossil-fuel based
fertilizer, since the animals provide it. That is the
food that is sustainable, not annual monocrops that
have destroyed the river and prairie ecosystems of the
midwest and the world.
Please think about it.
Sincerely, Lierre Keith |
