Green Party Mourns Loss of Member Tom Fox

We are overjoyed with the rescue of Christian Peacemaker Team’s Harmeet Sooden, Jim Loney and Norman Kember. However we also reflect on the great loss we experienced earlier this month upon learning of the murder of fellow CPT member Tom Fox.

Mr. Fox, who was in Iraq working as a member of the Christian Peacekeeper Teams (CPT) was also a member of the Green Party of Virginia. After being abducted in Baghdad last November with three other CPT members, Fox was murdered.

"Tom's dedication to nonviolence was absolute," said Kirit Mookerjee of the Green Party of Virginia. "His life is a model for Green Party members and for all Americans who value peace, justice, and the principles of nonviolent resolution of conflict. His death was senseless, but it also reflects the senselessness of the war on Iraq, which Tom, like the Green Party, passionately opposed. Greens join Langley Hill Friends Meeting, in northern Virginia to which Tom Fox belonged, in their appeal for peace in Iraq."

Greens expressed their condolences to Tom Fox's family and friends. The Green Party of the United States has called for immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq. Tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians, over 2,300 U.S. service members, and 54 foreign hostages have been killed as a result of the U.S. invasion, and Iraq is now on the brink of civil war.

Green Congressional Candidate Berg Launches Peace Org

Michael Berg is a peace activist, retired teacher, and Green Party Congressional candidate in Delaware. He is also the father of Nick Berg, who was abducted and killed on May 7, 2004, in retaliation for the torture of Iraqis in Abu Ghraib prison. After an initial period of mourning, Michael drew worldwide attention for speaking the truth when he said: “My son died for the sins of George Bush and Donald Rumsfeld.”

Berg continues to campaign for peace. On March 17, 2006, Berg participated in the founding press conference of Voters for Peace where he said: "We need to hold public officials who got us into the Iraq war accountable,” said Berg. “Being right [about the legitimacy of war] doesn't make us proud. It makes us angry and sorrowful for the needless deaths of tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians, the more than 2,300 U.S. service members, and the hundreds of civilian contractors."

Berg was the first to sign the Voters for Peace Peace Pledge, which states: “I will not vote for or support any candidate for Congress or President who does not make a speedy end to the war in Iraq, and preventing any future war of aggression, a public position in his or her campaign.”

A recent Zogby poll finds that 46% of Americans are in favor of ending the war in Iraq. For more information about Berg’s campaign, go to: www.bergforcongress.us

ACTION ALERT

Tell Your Senator to Hold Bush Accountable for Illegal Wiretapping

One of the most important liberties enshrined in our Constitution, is the fourth amendment: right to privacy. Unfortunately, this American freedom is being violated by our government through the use of illegal wiretapping.

The Federal Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) allows the executive branch the government to wiretap suspected terrorists in the United States. However, FISA only allows wiretapping with permission of the court, within 72 hours during a state of emergency, or during the first fifteen days of a Congressional Declaration of War. Furthermore FISA makes it a crime to wiretap outside of this authority.

The authorization of military force on September 18th, 2001 did NOT grant the president power to wiretap without a court order; and, contrary to what Bush thinks, the president’s constitutional authority does NOT grant the power necessary to issue warrant-less wiretapping outside the realm of FISA. Ask your Senator to censure Bush for authorizing this illegal program by using the Green Party’s letter-writing tool at: www.gp.org/action.
