Greens Lead on Impeachment of Bush and Votes Against Iraq War

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Green Party activists and elected Greens in Wisconsin and Oregon are leading efforts to pass resolutions against the continued occupation of Iraq at town and city levels. In California, Greens have helped introduce municipal resolutions calling for impeachment of President Bush for various abuses of power, including his decision to launch the invasion of Iraq based on deceptive evidence.

• WISCONSIN: 32 towns, villages and cities throughout Wisconsin will have a "Bring the Troops Home" question on the ballot on April 4. Milwaukee will be the 33rd to vote on a similar resolution in November, 2006.

Coalitions of Greens, Independents, Democrats, church groups, and peace and justice groups formed all over the state to collect the necessary petitions. Their efforts were coordinated by the Wisconsin Green Party and the Wisconsin Network for Peace and Justice. For a list of municipalities where voters will decide on the 'Bring Our Troops Home' question, as well as details and contact information, visit http://www.wnpj.org/homenow.

The Republican Party in Wisconsin has formed a PAC to fight the initiatives.

Wisconsin Greens, concerned that there are fewer limits on campaign financing for such initiatives, are investigating whether federal tax money is being used for the pro-war campaign.

• CALIFORNIA: On February 7, the City of San Francisco, with leadership from Supervisor and Rules Committee chair Ross Mirkarimi (Green) and other members of the Board of Supervisors, began consideration of a resolution calling for a full investigation, and impeachment or resignation of President Bush and Vice President Cheney. On February 16, the Rules Committee recommended full board approval of a resolution from the Board of Supervisors calling for impeachment.

• OREGON: On Tuesday, February 21, the Corvallis City Council became the first city government in Oregon to adopt a resolution calling for withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.

In January, the City Council of Arcata passed a resolution demanding the impeachment or resignation of President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney, citing violations of international and constitutional law. The Resolution was written and brought before the council by Councilmembers Dave Meserve and Harmony Groves, both of whom are Green.

Green Party of Alaska Wins Ballot Status in Time for 2006 Campaign

The Green Party will be able to enter the 2006 election cycle as fully recognized as other political parties by Court Order. Superior Court Judge Stephanie Joannides granted a preliminary injunction that prevents the State of Alaska from denying the Green Party equal benefits accorded to other Alaska political parties. Elections Advisor Jim Sykes said, "This is the second time the courts have struck down unfair legislative tampering with election laws that recognize political parties."

The Green Party challenged the law that restricts a ballot test of 3% to only one statewide race--3% of the vote in the Governor's race. If there's no Governor's race, 3% in the U.S. Senate race. If there is neither a Governor's race or US Senate race, then 3% in the U.S. House race. Sykes added, "The idea that only one statewide race can qualify in a certain year doesn't pass the 'red-face' test. The 1998 Governor's race attracted the fewest number of voters of three statewide races."

Sykes stated, "The Greens are the only small party in Alaska that has received more than 3% in a statewide political race every general election since 1990. Any one of those election results should be more than sufficient to meet the "modicum of support" test that is the basis for the law."

The judge agreed that if the Green Party were to win a U.S. Senate or U.S. House race and did not get 3% in the year of a Governor's race, they would still be denied political party recognition. "That's how absurd this law is," said Sykes. "The Republican majority took a bad 2002 law and made it even worse in 2003."

Sykes added, "Reasonable political party requirements passed the House last year but they were stripped out by the last Senate committee. This year, I hope the legislature will restore the fair legislative proposal intended to replace this ridiculous law."

Green Party Peace Action Committee Report

The Green Party Peace Action Committee is a network of approximately 50 Green Party members (states may appoint up to 3 representatives to GPAX). We meet "on-line" through our list-serve as well as through monthly telephone conferences. During the past year, GPAX has sponsored a GP presence at major national actions, including the January 2005 counter-inaugural in Washington, DC; a march at Ft. Bragg, NC, to commemorate the 2nd Anniversary of the Iraq invasion, and the September 24-25 national anti-war mobilization in Washington, DC. At the September march, we organized a GPAX feeder march and rally featuring Green candidates and speakers. We are endorsing several local actions for the upcoming 3rd Anniversary of the Iraq invasion in March, including the Veterans' March through the Gulf Region to New Orleans the website for the gulf march is: www.vetgulfmarch.org ; actions at Ft. Bragg - the website for the Ft. Bragg event page is www.ncpeacejustice.org , MacDill AFB in Tampa, the Pentagon, and others.

We have also supported the critical work of Greens providing relief services and rebuilding New Orleans: we urge fellow Greens to support Malik Rahim's work in the Common Ground Collective , the organizing of Leenie Halbert and Andrea Garland and others. This work saves lives, as well as drawing the contrast between spending for war as opposed to human needs in our own country. For more information about this work go to http://www.gp.org/katrina2005/

GPAX is seeking more members, activists, and aid to join our busy committee --we are especially looking for someone with website skills to help us better develop our online resources. For more information go to: http://www.gp.org/committees/peace/ or contact the co-chairs Elena Everett (greentararaider@yahoo.com) or Ann Wilcox (Wilcox_Ann@yahoo.com).
