Background

UNAC is a major, highly active antiwar and social justice coalition, and recently conducted a coordinated national day of action, in over 34 sites, against the ongoing war in Afghanistan. It does not simply protest war; it understands the need to connect the peace movement to other struggles against racism, sexism, and Islamophobia, attacks on civil liberties, and the struggle for climate justice. It recognizes that the struggle for peace must be a struggle against the military-industrial-financial complex that drives our nation to dominate other nations.
The Illinois Green Party is already a member organization within UNAC and a number of Greens from other states have been active within the coalition, some playing leading roles. The GPUS should be a member organization of UNAC and help lead the effort to build a strong and effective movement against U.S. imperialism.

Proposal

1. The Green Party of the United States shall submit an application to join UNAC as an organization.
2. The Green Party Peace Action Committee (GPAX) shall appoint two of its members to serve as GPUS liaisons to UNAC, to submit the application to join UNAC, keep GPAX informed of UNAC actions, resolutions, reports, resources, etc., and, where appropriate, recommend proposals for further action by the GPUS, such as endorsement of national mobilizations, demonstrations, conferences, or other actions. This would not preclude other Green Party members or state parties from joining, participating within or volunteering to assist UNAC as they see fit, but it would ensure at least one ongoing line of communication between the GPUS and UNAC.
3. Should UNAC change its principles of unity or undertake any action that might call into question its compatibility with the Ten Key Values or the interests of the Green Party, the liaisons to UNAC would have a duty to report such changes or actions to GPAX and the Steering Committee, to determine if the question of GPUS membership in UNAC should be revisited.

Resources

IMPLEMENTATION/TIMELINE/RESOURCES: GPAX would select the two liaisons to UNAC at its meeting immediately following adoption of this proposal by the NC. The liaisonsí first action would be to submit the application to join UNAC. The two persons selected as liaisons would obviously be expected to commit a modest amount of volunteer time, averaging few hours a month, to fulfill their duties. No financial obligations are anticipated. UNAC does not charge dues or impose financial obligations on member organizations. There may, of course, be additional demands of volunteer time and/or money if and when the GPUS decides to endorse or support specific actions, but such demands would only be incurred at that time.
